RussianPod101 Review: A huge library at a fair price. Old-school, but cool!

RussianPod101 has been around for nearly 20 years and has a huge library of Russian lessons. I signed up for Premium and tested it on desktop and in the app.

RussianPod101: a video lesson with Katya, and line-by-line audio in the app

Our Verdict

4.5/5

A huge library of short audio and video Russian lessons, from absolute beginner to advanced, with transcripts, vocabulary and notes for every lesson. It's cheap if you commit for a year or two. Some content and the platform feel a bit dated.

Pros

  • โœ“A huge library, from absolute beginner to advanced
  • โœ“Short lessons, about 15 minutes, so you don't lose focus
  • โœ“Every lesson has a transcript, vocabulary, notes and line-by-line audio
  • โœ“Guided pathways tell you what to do next
  • โœ“Video series alongside the audio lessons
  • โœ“Very cheap on a yearly or two-year plan
  • โœ“Good app, with lessons you can download

Cons

  • โœ—Some older lessons and videos look and sound dated
  • โœ—The platform feels old-fashioned next to newer apps
  • โœ—The hosts in my Russian lesson read the script rather than act it out
  • โœ—The 40-question level test is long
  • โœ—Lots of upsells and sale banners

How I tested it: Bought a month of Premium in October 2026 and tested it in Russian at intermediate level, on desktop and in the iPhone app. I took most of the level test, did a full audio lesson and a video lesson, and browsed the library.

Prices checked October 2026, US store.

How I rate

RussianPod101 is an online Russian course from Innovative Language. It's built around short audio lessons, like a podcast, with video, vocabulary and notes on top.

It's been around for something like 20 years, so there's a huge amount of content. I've recommended it for years, but I hadn't used it in a while.

So is it still worth it? Let's find out.

Signing up and pricing

There's a free account, and three paid plans: Basic, Premium and Premium PLUS.

Basic gets you all the lessons and notes. Premium adds line-by-line audio, assessments, flashcards and a word bank. Premium PLUS adds a teacher you can message.

Honestly, the price difference between Basic and Premium was so small that I just went with Premium.

RussianPod101 plan duration options from 1 month to 24 months with sale prices
The longer you commit, the cheaper it gets. These are October 2026 sale prices.

There was a sale on when I signed up, so a month of Premium cost me $13.75 instead of $25. Every plan has a 60-day money-back guarantee.

After checkout you get an upsell to Premium PLUS for an extra $12. I'm not really interested in a teacher on messenger, but I can see why some people would be.

Getting started

After signing up, you answer a few setup questions: your level, your goals, and whether you want a Russian Word of the Day email.

I picked Level 3, intermediate. That's probably about right for me. It's a little challenging, and I think you need that to learn.

Then there's a short welcome video that walks you through the dashboard, pathways, lesson tools and the app. A lot of software doesn't bother, so that was very helpful.

The dashboard puts your pathway and next lesson front and centre.

The dashboard asks what you're learning for, like travel, work or exams, and shows your pathway with the next step.

The level test

My pathway started with a diagnostic test. It's multiple choice, mostly filling in the gap in a Russian sentence.

The diagnostic is all multiple choice, with an "I'm not sure" option.

It's a good idea, but it's 40 questions long. That's a little over the top, and I'm not sure how accurate it is as a way to place you.

I got through most of it before moving on. You can also skip it and go straight to the first lesson.

The audio lessons

The audio lessons are the heart of RussianPod101. The Level 3 Russian pathway alone has 50 lessons and 44 assessments, about 13 hours of audio.

My first lesson was Getting Fit in Russia, about signing up at a gym. The lesson audio was about 14 minutes long.

Every line of the dialogue has its own audio and a record button.

The dialogue itself is very short. But it gets dealt with in a lot of different ways, and I think that will be very useful.

You can switch the dialogue between Russian, romanisation and English. Each line has a play button and a microphone, so you can record yourself and compare.

Each word has audio, a slowed-down version and an example sentence.

There's a vocabulary list with audio for every word, plus a slowed-down version. You can add words to your flashcards or word bank.

The lesson notes go into the grammar from the dialogue. In my lesson that was polite requests and verb prefixes, with plenty of examples.

The lesson notes explain the grammar behind the dialogue.

There's also a full transcript and a comments section, where the team answers questions.

The lessons are short enough that you won't lose concentration, and there are lots of ways to work with the material. I really liked that.

One small criticism

The two hosts in my Russian lesson, an American and a Russian, were clearly reading from a script. They didn't try to make it sound like a conversation.

It won't hurt your learning, but it's a little off-putting. Every language has different hosts, and I've heard much better in other Pod101 languages.

Video lessons

Alongside the audio lessons there are video series. The pathway lessons are mostly audio, so the videos work more as a supplement.

I tried 10 Phrases for Bad Students from a series called Best of Katya for Intermediate Learners. It was only about four minutes long.

Katya's video lessons are short, with the Russian and English on screen.

You get the same tools with the videos as with the audio lessons: vocabulary, examples and a transcript.

There are playback options too, including slowed-down audio. I don't like slowed-down audio in general, but some people will, so it's good that it's there.

The lesson library

Beyond your pathway, there's the full library. You can filter it by level, from absolute beginner to advanced, plus bonus content.

The library goes from absolute beginner to advanced, plus bonus series.

For the bigger languages, like Spanish and Italian, I've counted well over a thousand lessons.

So say I'm at the lower end of intermediate. I've still got all of intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced ahead of me, plus all the bonus series.

It's a great thing to listen to and scroll through instead of TikTok or Instagram.

The app

RussianPod101 lives inside the Innovative Language app, which covers all 34 languages. Your account and progress carry over from the website.

Line-by-line audio works in the app too.

The app has the same lessons, line-by-line audio, vocabulary and notes. You can download lessons to listen offline, and the player keeps going while you browse.

What's not so good

Some of the content is up to 20 years old, so it shows its age. A few of the older videos look low quality.

The language hasn't changed, of course. But the platform still feels a bit old-fashioned, even after their updates. I think it could be more modern.

It's not a huge drawback, though.

You'll also see plenty of upsells and sale banners. They're easy to ignore, but they're everywhere.

How it compares

  • RussianPod101: a huge library of short audio and video lessons for every level. A monthly or yearly subscription, cheap on longer plans.
  • Rocket Russian: a structured course with longer audio lessons and lots of practice tools. A one-off payment per level.
  • Pimsleur: audio-only lessons focused on speaking, with far less content around them.

If you want lots of listening at every level for very little money, RussianPod101 is hard to beat.

Pricing

Basic starts at about $8 a month. Premium is $25 a month, or $15 a month billed yearly, and less again on a two-year plan.

They have sales often. During the October 2026 sale, Premium on a two-year plan worked out at $5.50 a month, and Basic at $2.20 a month.

That's next to nothing for this much content. I think the price is very reasonable, and the longer plans are the best deal.

A free account gets you the first three lessons of every pathway, so you can try it before you pay.

Who this is for

  • Learners who want lots of listening practice at their level
  • Anyone who likes short lessons they can fit into a commute
  • Learners who want a clear pathway, with plenty of extra content on the side
  • Anyone on a budget who's happy to commit for a year or two

Who this is not for

  • Anyone who wants a slick, modern app experience
  • Learners who want a lot of live speaking practice

Verdict

I was excited about Pod101 before, and I'm very happy to come back to it.

It's a brilliant tool. There's so much content, from absolute beginner to advanced, and the price is very reasonable.

Some of it is a bit dated, and the hosts vary from language to language. But that's not a huge drawback.

It's a huge recommendation from me. Try RussianPod101 for free and see if the lessons click.
