Stop telling yourself you have a bad memory | Anthony Metivier | In this discussion, Anthony Metivier shares a few memory-related myths before finally breaking down how anyone can deliberately improve their memory and retention in foreign languages with spatial techniques such as the memory palace, where large amounts of information can be stored in a ‘physical' location in your mind. |
From internalising to fully integrating the language | María Ortega García | From internalising to fully integrating the language. As language learners, we've been taught many techniques to “acquire” the language, and “assimilate” it. Acquisition and assimilation are the lowest levels in language learning. But the array of techniques starts to dwindle when we start aiming towards internalising the language, to successfully incorporate it in our lives, or in our expression. But what happens beyond the internalisation point? What happens when we want to reach the highest and deepest level of learning? Here there is close to nothing that speaks to the learner's need to “integrate” the language which is to make the language learned into a whole, fully combined and merged with the individual. Languages are perceived and treated still as separated boxes external to the individual, like countries from which we will always be either foreigners or natives. But what about the fluid middle space of “not-native” but “not-foreigner”? In my presentation, I talk about that in-between space in languages where we are not native but want to achieve our own status of ownership and mastery. I will share what this status of ownership and mastery of the language means, and how to get there. Learning methods. Holistic learning. Embodied learning. Mindset. |

Join me as I explore some of the baggage we pick up at the beginning of our languages and carry with us all the way to advanced. Things like impostor syndrome, perfectionism, limiting beliefs, and fear of making mistakes, just to name a few, affect how we learn and engage with a language at every level, even if the effects are different as our language abilities grow. Acknowledging these types of traits and tendencies, learning how they show up in our languages, and discovering tools for managing them are incredibly valuable to shaping that relaxing and joyful advanced language life you've wanted. |
